Community Model Interface for Tsunami (ComMIT) tool and training

As part of the ITIC Tsunami Evacuation Maps, Plans, and Procedures (TEMPP) Project, new features were added to the ComMIT interface tool (MOST model) to enable it to support tsunami inundation modeling for evacuation mapping. A standardized ComMIT training course, with tutorials and hands-on exercises, was also developed, and this is now available for teaching globally, on request and subject to external funding.

ComMIT is an interface around NOAA’s Method Of Splitting Tsunamis (MOST) tsunami model. ComMIT is designed for ease of use, and allows the dissemination of results to the community while addressing concerns associated with proprietary issues of bathymetry and topography. It uses initial conditions from a pre-computed propagation database, has an easy-to-interpret graphical interface, and requires only portable hardware. ComMIT was initially developed for Indian Ocean countries with support from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
