Tsunami exercises are conducted to strengthen tsunami preparedness along US coasts. Historical tsunami records from sources such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) show that tsunamis have impacted US coasts several times in the past century. Exercising emergency response plans is thus an important part of tsunami preparedness. A lesson learned from the destructive 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami is that even areas rarely impacted by tsunamis can suffer tremendous damage and casualties if the people that live and/or travel in these areas are not prepared. NOAA and the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program (NTHMP) are providing the framework for these exercises in order to encourage coastal emergency responders to test and update their tsunami response plans, especially at the local levels.
